6 Interesting Things You Probably Didn’t Know About Colombia…

Yes Colombia is famous for many things. It’s coffee, the Amazon river that runs through it, it’s stunning Caribbean beaches and of course, Shakira. But, there’s a whole other side to Colombia that you probably didn’t know, yet is still entirely impressive in it’s own right.

Our Favourite 6

So, without any further delay, here are some of our favourite, interesting things about Colombia that we’re really happy to be sharing with you.

#1 Our Really High Coastal Mountain

We have one of the highest coastal mountains IN THE WORLD!! It’s called Pico Colon and is just 30 miles from the Caribbean sea. It stands at 5700m tall and the views from the top are, well…. Come and see them for yourself!!

#2 Our Cut Flower Exports

Colombia exports a whole load of cut flowers every single year. We believe Colombia’s cut flower exports are only beaten by the Netherlands who are the biggest exporter in the world.

 #3 Renewable Energies

Approx 70% of Colombia’s energy comes from renewable hydro power with the energy from winds and rivers which could easily supply more than enough power.

 #4 Bio-Diversity

Colombia is an incredibly bio-diverse country with a huge variety of birds, frogs and plant species which haven’t even been identified yet!

#5 Adventure Sports

The adventure sports industry here in Colombia is still comparably fairly young though it has to be said that it is one of the more interesting industries to be involved in. The weather and terrain here in Colombia is so diverse that it lends itself very well to adventure sports like mountain biking, kitesurfing, paragliding, rafting and so much more!!

#6 It’s Bigger Than You Might Think

Colombia is approximately a similar size to the combined land area of France, Spain AND Portugal. We’re always surprise by how many people we meet who had assumed Colombia to be a very small country.

 #7 The Bonus One!

You may have noticed that this one is number 7 – well we threw in a little bonus because we just love to see people’s reactions to it:

There’s one place in Colombia where Chickens have learnt to swim! No this isn’t a joke! Chickens in Corinto have learnt to swim in order to mate cross the river to with ducks that live on an island in the middle.
